Statutory Holidays vs. Public Holidays Calculator

Statutory holidays and general holidays are different systems. The gazette adds 17 named general holidays a year, plus every Sunday. Statutory holidays are fewer and rise on the Employment Ordinance timetable: 14 days in 2024–2025, 15 from 2026 after Easter Monday was added, 16 from 2028 after Good Friday, and 17 from 2030 after the day following Good Friday. Buddha’s Birthday became a statutory holiday in 2022, not 2026. Which set an employee gets depends on the contract, not on red dates on a calendar.

Every employee gets the statutory holiday itself. Holiday pay generally needs three months on a continuous contract and uses the 12-month average daily wage before that holiday. The daily figure here is only monthly salary × 12 ÷ (working days a week × 52). It is not the section 713 average. Monthly-paid staff do not automatically receive extra cash for extra general holidays.

In 2026 the named general holidays still missing from the statutory list are Good Friday and the day following Good Friday. If a statutory holiday falls on a rest day, the substitute must be the next day that is not already a statutory holiday, an alternative holiday, a substituted holiday or a rest day. In 2026, Ching Ming, the Birthday of the Buddha and Chung Yeung fall on Sunday. Winter Solstice or Christmas is one employer choice, still counted as one day.

Before comparing jobs or renewing a contract, ask which set the workplace follows and how a clash with a rest day is handled. Confirm dates with the Labour Department’s year list and the GovHK general-holiday gazette. The pay-difference figure is a scenario, not a debt you can sue for.
